Spotted Porcupinefish
Isn’t this lil guy cute? The number and variety of puffer fish out there is amazing. I spotted this one at a local nature center Gumbo Limbo. This fish looks friendly, but if startled he can swallow water and puff out spikes.
Fun facts
-
Its spines are modified scales. They lie flat against its body until it puffs up, then stand straight out.
-
To inflate, it gulps water and swells to several times its normal size, which makes it very hard for a predator to swallow.
-
Its fused, beak-like teeth are strong enough to crush snails, crabs and sea urchins.
