About This Artwork

I almost drowned as a child, twice.

The first time I remember slipping off the stairs into the deeper end of the pool when my mother was turned around. I can still see the blurry under water image of her swimming to save me in my memory.

The second time was while I was filling up a water gun on the side of the pool. Leaning forward I lost my balance and fell face first into the deep end. Before I could hit the bottom I felt my leg get tugged and I was yanked upside down out of the pool. I was met by the upside down face of my grandfather.

Since then I’ve always been afraid of drowning. Oddly I think that’s why I love to swim.
